DOKITA

EPISODE 1
Linda was outrightly dejected.
She had gotten to the notice board only to see that the aggregate score attached to her matriculation number was just a little over her biological age. And she had just clocked 21!
She had spoken to her dad this morning before class.
‘My doctor’, he’d called her. ‘I’m so proud of you.’
If only he knew. If only they knew!
It wasn’t like she was a bad student, she sincerely put her best into studying her books. Burnt the midnight oil. Paced the floor when she felt sleepy. Jumped up a few times, till she discovered that this technique wasn’t made for her- vertigo was beginning to set in!
‘Babe.’ ‘Babe!’
She turned back to face Tolu.
‘We are going to Pharmacology lab o. 500l students have bounced us from the class’
‘Dr James is waiting for us there.’
She had been standing in front of the notice board, motionless.
Tolu came nearer and held her hands.
‘Don’t worry ehn, shebi its just in-course, you can make up for it with Block 2 results’.
‘You passed introductory posting results, shey?’
 Linda shrugged her shoulders clumsily.
‘I scored 51 in intro.! Now, 28. It’s not even close to half when added together. I just hope I don’t fail Block 2 exams so I can at least sit for Pathology exams’
‘Amen. Don’t worry, you’ll pass.’
‘We’ll start reading from now. I’m coming, let me pick my note in class’ Tolu said.
Tolu was her best friend. She ALWAYS passed.
Actually, in pre-clinicals, they both almost always passed.
But since they crossed over to the clinical wing, Linda was almost consistently part of the bottom 5 in the class while Tolu still managed to remain among the top few.
And they read together.
‘So shall we?’ Tolu said as she exited the class
‘Ok, let’s go’, said Linda, with mixed emotions.
**************************************
Doctor Fola Adetona wished he could rewind the hands of the clock.
Today, my dear friend, you will be a real doctor; he said to himself, with a half-frown on his face. It was no longer a mirage. No déjà vu.
It was his first day on the job as a house officer.
And he was to start with Paediatrics unit!
‘Hmmmn’ he sighed. Paediatrics!
He had dreaded that unit while he was in school but really, who hadn’t?
And it wasn’t even in another school, it was in the school from which he had graduated.
He could just picture Dr. Makanjuola, the Senior Registrar.
Back when he was in school, he had once told him on ward rounds:
‘You cannot impress me because you’re not intelligent.’ As how now?
He was sincerely prepared for the worst.
As he stepped into the Paediatric clinic, he came face-to-face with his nemesis. Dr. Makanjuola
He stifled a groan, and greeted him.
‘Adetona, what are you doing here?’
‘Sir, I’m starting housemanship today. With…with Paediatrics’. He stuttered.
‘Oh, ok. You can go to the Emergency room (ER). Join the Senior house officer there.’
‘Yes sir.’
One last glance at him
‘Don’t do anything stupid o. And, you’re welcome to the unit.’
Crest fallen, Fola walked down briskly to the ER; sincerely praying that he’d have time to settle in before any serious case would present.
‘Guy, how far? Na here you dey now?’ Fola greeted the senior house officer, Dr. Ehis
‘Yes, o. I don comot Medicine since last month. Shey you don start housejob ni?’
‘Yes o, and na here dem throw me.’ Fola said, with a smirk on his face.
‘Guy, welcome ehn.’
‘E gbami o! e gbami o!’
A troubled looking young woman came in trembling, carrying a child who was at most, 5 years old.
He was having a seizure attack.
‘Omo mi n se giri o’
She pulled at Fola’s ward coat
‘Doctor! Doctor!’
Fola stood motionless.
Trouble had just landed!

WANNABE INTERN

Week 2 Message to the Pre-Intern: don’t lose hope! Week 2, for me, was 2 months post-induction. This was when the wait began to sink in. You mean I’ve been home for two whole months? By now, I was literally chewing on my fingernails. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t scared of getting a space, but I certainly wasn’t confident about any place anymore. That is when I began to write this book. Today is the 12th of September and I sit at the dining table in my parents’ house, typing at 11:27pm (because well, I have an editing job to finish up, but mostly because I don’t have to go anywhere tomorrow morning). If I don’t want to, I don’t even have to take a bath tomorrow morning because well, I can stay indoors all day! (I most likely will stay indoors, except for those few minutes when I step out to buy hot akara for my akamu). I am spent. You know, I have applied to a couple of places now. Let me start with the first: LS Health Service Commission At the State Health servic...

LIKE FAITH AND LOVE

Gal 5:6 - For [if we are] in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith activated and energized and expressed and working through love. The heart and the lungs are like faith and love, their functions intertwined, their locations proximate, the feelings that they generate just as conclusive. They produce hope for the survival of the physical body, just like faith and love produce hope for the spiritual body’s survival. Experiences of today made me realize something: we need faith intertwined with love to breathe as spirit beings, as much as we need the functional capacity of our cardio-respiratory apparatuses to breathe the breath of life. It’s that important…faith and love I mean.
